Researchers in Israel have found that seniors who follow a Mediterranean diet have better health and less disabilities. The researchers examined data from more than four thousand seniors (over 70 years of age) living in the U.S. and Israel. Cognitive and physical functions, including faster walking, were significantly better among the Americans (14 percent) and Israelis (11 percent) who pursued healthier lifestyles, including the Mediterranean diet.
My Viewpoint: No surprise here for me. People age faster because of accelerated inflammation in the body that leads to many aging-associated diseases, such as diabetes, cardiovascular conditions, and neurodegenerative disorders. One major reason is the high content of carbohydrates, including sugar, in the typical Western diet. The Mediterranean diet helps prevent inflammation because of its healthy profile of antioxidants from fruits, vegetables, and good fats from fish, avocado, and, above all, extra virgin olive oil.
What This Means To You: As a doctor who has treated the ravages of accelerated aging, I can tell you that prevention is ALWAYS easier than cure. But it’s never too late to change and adopt healthier lifestyle habits, including the proven Mediterranean diet.
Recommendation: I’m a big fan of a Mediterranean-type diet – Taste-wise, and health-wise, you can’t beat it! Click here to learn more about my dietary recommendations.
